The origins of Spectra, an organization for LGBT mathematicians
The history of Spectra and of the social meetings at the JMM are closely tied to a dark, discrimnatory time in American politics: the passage of Colorado's Amendment 2. This article in the Notices by Robert Bryant, Ron Buckmire, Lily Khadjavi, and Douglas Lind describes in detail this context and the mathematical community's response.
